Today is the Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust
PDF Печать Email

Today people address themselves to tragedy of the past, try to realize why the ideas of racism, Nazism, anti-Semitism pushing to murders, attacks, pogroms and crushing souls and fates are still alive, and to a great extent in Russia too.

In many countries of the world the Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust is marked today – dealing with mass elimination of Jews by Nazis during the World War II. It was established by the UN decision in 2005. Oswiencim (Auschwitz) was released on January 27, 1945 by soldiers of the 100th Lvov infantry division included into the 60th army of the First Ukrainian front. More than 200 Soviet soldiers perished during the battles for liberation of the camp.

The first prisoners of the death camp were the participants of Polish resistance arrested by Hitlerites, and later Oswiencim became a place of mass genocide of the Jews. In this camp the Hitlerites eliminated 1 mln. 100 thousand Jews, dozens thousand Gypsies, Poles, Soviet prisoners of war.

Joint prayers of representatives of various religions are planned today near the monument to victims of Oswiencim as well as speech of the prime-minister of Israel B. Netanyahu, delegation of the Knesset deputies and other distinguished guests who would pay homage of memory to the deceased.

Within memorial activities the scientific conference would take place participated by ministers of education of EC member-countries.

The Forum devoted to topical lessons of the Holocaust is held in Krakow during these days. The central attention will be paid to Iran and terrorist organizations sponsored by this country. As the president of the European Jewish congress V. Kantor informed, six thousand European companies are still working with Iran despite the governments of these countries call to boycotting Iran.

The president of Israel Sh. Peres will speak in the German Bundestag. He will devote a part of his speech to “today’s successors of Hitler’s cause”, and the president of Iran would be called the principal of them.

As mass media inform, the day before Sh. Peres met the chancellor of Germany A. Merkel who stated that new sanctions against Iran would be possibly imposed as soon as in February. Germany and France, with their joint efforts, are striving for the soonest taking of resolute measures aimed against Iran’s nuclear program.

During past years famous historians and politicians, public figures, witnesses of the time spoke in the Bundestag. They included for example the writers - the Holocaust survivors – laureate of Nobel Peace Prize Elie Wiesel, laureate of Nobel Literature Prize Imre Kertesz.

Speeches of Israeli politicians will take place today in other countries too. The minister of foreign affairs A. Liberman will make a speech in Budapest, his deputy D. Ayalon – in Bratislava, the minister of culture and sports L. Livnat – in Paris.

The catastrophe of the European Jewry during the World War II is the most terrible crime in history of the mankind. The ministry of foreign affairs of Turkey made this statement. “We condemn any manifestation of anti-Semitism, racism and xenophobia categorically” the statement text says. “Our duty is to take every possible step for not admitting genocide and mass murders in future; this is the main lesson of the Catastrophe”. The observers note that such a statement became especially sudden on the background of aggravation of relations between Israel and Turkey during recent time.

Today, on January 27 the memorial party-requiem will begin at 6.00 p.m. in the big hall of the Central House of literary persons (53 Bolshaya Nikitskaya street). Similar parties are held annually by the Fund and the Center “Holocaust” for already 15 years. The former prisoner of death camp Auschwitz Anatoly Vanukevich and its liberator Usher Margulis will share their reminiscences about the camp. The minister of culture of RF A. Avdeyev, special representative of the president of RF on international cultural cooperation M. Shvydkoy, diplomats, leaders of ethnic and religious organizations, and cultural figures will speak at the party.

Moscow bureau for human rights joins all the words of memory and grief and hopes that the government bodies and public organizations of Russia would increase their activity for perpetuating the memory of victims of the Holocaust on the territory of our country. This means both installing memorials on the places of mass elimination and studying history of the tragedy in schools and colleges and propaganda of ideas of tolerance and no doubt – tough response to the actions of homebred Nazis.
