Statement in connection with desecration of monuments to Soviet warriors abroad

 The World War II was the borderline where the universal evil that got a form of Nazism and heroism of people who saved the world from destruction became apparent completely. Allied states made a big contribution into the victory over fascism but the Soviet people had undergone the main weight of struggle and biggest number of victims. Millions Soviet soldiers poured their blood not only upon their native land but upon countries of Europe saving them from brown plague.
Unfortunately the joy of victory both in the USSR and in Baltic countries and countries of Eastern Europe was clouded by the fact that Communist reign was introduced in them, and Stalin’s regime was behind it. Ruthless chekists of every color executed tortured people and sent them to exile unhesitatingly. Alas, in many European countries gravity of post-war Communism overshadowed the feat of Soviet soldiers who averted much bigger misfortune – fascism – from these countries.
Director of Moscow bureau for human rights Alexander Brod: “The past becomes obliterated from the memory. And here are veterans-SS-members who march along the streets of Baltic capitals, official calendars are published glorifying Nazi criminals, monuments to collaborators are erected and streets are named in honor of murderers. And cemeteries all around Europe where remains of Soviet soldiers lie are subject to profanation, memorials with glorious heroic names are covered with swastika”.
Almost every month reports come about the next barbaric deed of desecration of soldiers’ names. Here are just some of them:
- In Lithuanian city Panevezys act of vandalism towards burial place of Soviet warriors who perished during the Great Patriotic war was committed. Unknown criminals had driven 18 tombstones out at the military cemetery;
- acts of vandalism and attempts of representatives of some political forces of Bulgaria to achieve its destruction don’t stop towards the monument to the Soviet Army located in the center of Sofia. Not long ago hooligans stained figures of warriors on one of bas-reliefs of monument with colored paint;
- at Tallinn military cemetery hooligans that are not detained yet broke informational stands;
- Soviet military memorial in Bucharest was poured over with red paint, and inscriptions being abusive towards memory of heroes who were killed for liberation of Rumania from fascism were made on sides of pedestal;
- unknown vandals desecrated memorial of Soviet warriors at the cemetery in Warsaw.
The fact is also striking that monuments are desecrated not only in European countries but also in former republics of the Soviet Union the residents of which poured their blood for their own land:
- in Tashkent the monument to the Hero of the Soviet Union, Guards major general Sabir Rakhimov was disassembled; he was the only Uzbek general of the Great Patriotic war and perished in 1945;
- also in Uzbekistan monuments were disassembled in 2009 that were installed in 1970s in honor of 30th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic war;
- memorial of Victory in Kutaisi was blown up in Georgia;
- in Simferopol a group of young people installed sound amplifier and microphone near the Eternal flame on the Grave of unknown soldier and sang songs of obscene contents with guitar and drank spirit drinks;
- in Ajar village Dioknisi another monument to warriors and heroes who perished during the Great Patriotic war was destroyed;
The process of de-Nazification of Germany looks to be executed not completely. Hydra of fascism raises its head again there. Thus, in Tiergarten and Lichtenberg unknown persons had mutilated the basement of monument crowned with a bronze figure of Soviet soldier. However in general it should be admitted that more reverent and respectful attitude towards monuments to Soviet warriors than even that in our Motherland is maintained in Western countries.
Any people, any state can have their future only when they remember about the past. When the past is forgotten or distorted it is hardly possible to reckon on anything. |
