On May 9 Russia marks the 64th anniversary of the victory over fascism – the ideology that made racism and elimination of “non-Aryan” peoples its main principle. Unfortunately one must admit that in the country that suffered enormous victims in the struggle against Nazism, the misanthropic ideology condemned by the whole mankind still finds understanding and support of a part of the society. Even the fact that the Slavs, Russians were “untermensch” subject to inhuman treatment and elimination in the opinion of the “fuhrer” of German Nazis, does not stop the domestic neo-Nazis. One of recent facts of expressing public sympathies towards Nazism was the appearing of a transparency congratulating Hitler on his birthday during recent football match.
Why such phenomena are possible in the country that conquered Nazism? For many reasons the construction of full-fledged democracy and developed civil society is still remote yet in Russia. Psychological, economic and social consequences of dozens years of the Communist regime are not extirpated yet. Objective problems of the economy and mistakes of the authorities, gigantic corruption level in the country, consequences of the USSR collapse, imperfection of legislation, weakness of democratic movement and liberal parties, current global economic crisis promote awakening of meanest manifestations of ethnic hatred, desire of a “strong hand” and, as a consequence, forming of radical youth groups of the ultra-right orientation. Hundreds groups of skinheads are active in Russia practically openly, and their nationalism comes to a simplest formula – to kill all the “non-Russians”. Only in January-April 2009 80 attacks and attempted attacks motivated by aggressive xenophobia were committed, and 24 dead and 75 wounded at least were their result. Not just “aliens” are subject to attacks of radical nationalists but also representatives of the authority which is announced “non-Russian” with enviable regularity. Thus, on May 5 and 6 radical nationalists set fire to the building of Directorate of home affairs of Leninsky district in Nizhniy Novgorod and made an attempt to set fire to the local militia station in Cheboksary and military comissariat in Moscow within the “revenge day” announced in advance. Unfortunately the Russian authorities pay insufficient attention to such dangerous tendencies. Despite the fact that censures on the cases connected with ethnic dissension are passed much more often, the sentences are most often suspended or minimal. Almost no attention is paid to hundreds books, brochures, newspapers of the most disgusting misanthropic orientation disseminated easily in the country. Lack of corresponding education, real political discussion, of competition of political parties as well as the “pocket” justice hamper the combat against neo-Nazism and xenophobia a lot. This everything serves not upbringing of a man in the spirit of tolerance and respect towards the other but on the contrary develops his indifference towards the social processes and often rouses his nationalistic aggressiveness. For overcoming these phenomena and not admitting the development of events according to the worst scenario, the whole society – authorities, public, rights defenders – must withstand Nazism, xenophobia, intolerance resolutely, and lay the shoots of respect towards the person, state, labor, into the Russian society. Only then we would be worthy of memory of millions soldiers who gave their lives at the fronts of the Great Patriotic war for Russia to live and flourish.
